Our Form of Worship

Our form of worship is commonly known in the Episcopal Church as "High Church". This means that there is a strong emphasis on the use of comtemporary Prayer Book Rite 2 language and ceremony in our liturgy. We make use of such elements as chanting of various prayers and Psalms, the use of incense to purify the altar and celebrants, and the ringing of bells during the Communion rites. Much of our music comes from the 1982 Hymnal used by all Episcopal Churches.

However, because we are a predominantly African-American congregation, We also employ the use of the African-American Hymnal: "Lift Every Voice And Sing". This Hymnal contains songs that reflect the unique worship experiences that African Americans share with Almighty God. Most of the songs in this book are mainstays in other Black Protestant denominations. Our choir is also well versed in singing traditional hymns and anthems as well as Gospel music and also "Negro Sprituals." We attempt to integrate elements of the Black worship experience into the traditonal Anglican liturgy. Much of our service music and chants come from the Lift Every Voice and Sing hymnal as well as other African-American liturgical musical sources. We encourage our congregation to clap, sing or raise hands in adoration as the Spirit leads them. The members of the Church of the Holy Cross feel that our form of worship allows us to stay true to both our Anglican and African-American roots.
