The Mission of the Church of the Holy Cross

THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY CROSS is to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ and to minister to the needs of the inner city of Pittsburgh by:

1. Providing Spirit-filled worship services where God is glorified through preaching, praise, and prayer.

2. Responding, through missions and service, to the spiriual, social, and cultural needs of African-American families, youth, and other individual living in the Homewood-Brushton community.

3. Evangelizing and reclaiming for Christ those who have not accepted Him as Lord and Saviour.

4. Providing a spiritual and cultural center which promotes the rich and distinctive African-American worship musical tradtions within the Anglican and Episcopal communion.

5. Being a center where people, irrespective of denomination, social class, age, or race can gather together in the spirit of Christian love and compassion to bring about change and reconciliation.

The Vision of Holy Cross

By the year 2010, as an inner-city Episcopal congregation, The Church of the Holy Cross will be a large,thriving, and biblically based community of intensely faithful people who hunger for an intimate relationship with God. We will be a beacon to others who wish to joyfully proclaim Jesus as Lord in worship and service. We will have a wholistic, full service, and unmatched outreach ministry that affrims the great commandment of loving our neighbors, and which gives hope and transforms lives, so that others will see Jesus in our deeds as well as our words.

The Holy Cross Theme:

This passage from the book of Isaiah was originally adopted for use during our transition to a full-time rector, but due to the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the congregation, it was decided that the theme will be a permanent part of our parish's liturgy. It is recited by the congregation prior to dismissal from every Mass.

"Fear not, for I have redeemed you, I have called you by name, you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned...
Fear Not, for I am with you"

Isaiah 43:1-5
